Mantra: A sacred sound, word or a combination of, which are repeated to aid in meditation.
According to Quantum Physics the entire Universe is made up of energy vibrating at different frequencies. Repeating a Mantra (which may or may not have a literal meaning) creates powerful sound vibrations, felt by both the reciter and the listener.
Mantras can be repeated out loud or in one’s own head. Kirtans are a form of publicly performed Mantras accompanied by musicians. Some Mantras are very short whereas others involve entire verses.
Try: The most common Mantra is ‘Om’ (the sound of the universe, pronounced a-u-m) or Shanti (meaning peace).
Find a comfortable seated position. Close your eyes and focus on your breath (in and out through the nose). Repeat your chosen Mantra for around 10-20 minutes.
For shorter Mantras it is recommended to repeat 108 times, a sacred number in Yoga and other religions.
